Description
Baroness Orczy sets the story in 1792, at the height of the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. Sir Percy Blakeney, a seemingly foppish English aristocrat, plays the part of a dim-witted socialite in London but secretly orchestrates bold escapes for condemned French nobles. Investigators from the revolutionary government, especially Citizen Chauvelin, constantly attempt to track him down.
The novel blends historical events with swashbuckling adventure and romance as Marguerite Blakeney, Sir Percy’s wife, becomes entangled in the dangerous chase for her husband’s secret. The narrative emphasizes courage, disguise, and loyalty under relentless threat, rewarding readers with dramatic narrow escapes and clever strategy.
