jpg.storeHigh school is full of monsters. Brian’s high school may be surrounded by a tall iron fence, but that doesn’t stop him and his friends from ditching school. When they return for a stagecraft class (easy A!), they find the school and surrounding city in the grip of a plague transforming victims into necrotic monsters seeking living bone marrow to feed upon. With the school in chaos, Brian’s only chance of survival is to stay barricaded in the performing arts department. His heart won’t allow that: his sister, in remission from leukemia, and his ex-girlfriend, who suffers from PTSD, are somewhere in the school in need of rescue.
Description
Brian and his friends are not part of the cool crowd. They’re the misfits and the troublemakers – the ones who know how to jump their high school’s fence to skip class, who aren’t above a fistfight now and then . . . the usual.
So when a plague breaks out that twists the bodies and minds of the infected, they’re the only ones with a chance of surviving. The virus turns Brian’s classmates and teachers into bloodthirsty attackers who don’t die easily. The whole school goes on lockdown, but Brian and his best friend, Chad, are safe (and stuck) in the performing arts department – far from Brian’s sister, Kenzie, and his ex-girlfriend Laura, who suffers from debilitating PTSD.
Brian and Chad, along with some drama kids to whom Brian had never given the time of day, decide to find the girls and bring them to the safety of the theater. But it won’t be easy, and it will test everything they thought they knew about themselves and their classmates. By the end of the day, even if they survive, they may not be human . . .

What they say about SICK:
“Gore and action will leave enthralled readers thrilled and then sated with each kill on either side. However, Leveen’s violent romp isn’t without conscience. Community, humanity, and mortality all come under the microscope in this surprisingly earnest effort.” ~ Booklist
“Leveen keeps his story straightforward and fast-paced, with no padding but plenty of gore and deadly peril. … readers who love zombies will devour it.” ~ Kirkus
“In an exciting take on the zombie novel, Leveen shifts to horror while maintaining his trademark complex relationships and character-driven storytelling.” ~ Publishers Weekly
“[Characters] witness horrors they cannot have possibly imagined before and are pushed beyond the boundaries of imagination. … Sick is definitely not for the faint of heart, and those who shy away from vivid details should look elsewhere- descriptions of mutilations (tearing of flesh, breaking of bones) echo throughout the pages, and the cannibalism that ensues once the victims come down with the zombie virus gives films like Resident Evil or World War Z (the movie) a run for their money. That said, Leveen’s characters are extremely detailed and the world absolutely gripping to readers who adore the genre.” ~ TeenLibrarianToolbox
“The action is fast and full of phantasmagoric details.” ~ Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books
