Greyhaven, northern England, 1952. Thomas Hale has learned to survive being overlooked. He works, keeps to himself, and lives for one thing only: Saturday afternoons at Greyhaven Athletic. When the club wins, the town feels almost bearable. When it loses, something inside Thomas begins to shift.

After a string of humiliating defeats, disturbing incidents spread through the fog-bound streets: a brutal assault by the canal, a terrified witness, a silence settling over the terraces. Soon the town begins to whisper about a man named Elias—a shadowy figure who seems to appear whenever the final whistle brings bad news.

As suspicion moves from the streets into the dressing room, Thomas must confront the possibility that the most dangerous person in Greyhaven may not be a stranger at all.
