Description

On a Monday in March, Dr. Mateus Carvalho smells something unusual in the hallway of the University Hospital in Manaus. The patient has bleeding eyes. The diagnosis is impossible: hantavirus with sustained human-to-human transmission, a lethality rate close to 40%. Mateus does everything right. He activates the protocols. And he discovers that someone already knew.

In São Paulo, Lara Drummond, a former Federal Police officer now an independent consultant, receives a phone call that shouldn't exist: three weeks before the first case, a laboratory in the Cayman Islands requested an emergency license for an antiviral against precisely that strain. A strain that, officially, didn't exist.

What Lara and Mateus discover in the following weeks is an operation of scale and patience that surpasses any traditional conspiracy. It begins in 1971, when Nixon broke the gold standard and central banks gained unrestricted power to create currency without physical backing. It continues in 1987, when twelve people gathered in Geneva and defined a 30-40 year horizon to gradually transform the world using crises—financial, health, security—as instruments to accelerate reforms that no electorate would consciously approve.

The virus in Manaus is the operational result of this plan.

The characters are all too real: Mateus, who refuses to sign a document that would silence him and stays by each patient's side until the end. Thomas Brenner, an Austrian analyst who spent two years alone in Basel documenting everything. Ana Paula Drumond, a civil servant who presses "send" at 4 a.m. knowing she will be dismissed the next day. Werner Siebert, a retiree who decides, in a single night, which side he is on.

On the other side: men with names in the minutes of 1987, impeccable records, absolute conviction that what they do is necessary because democracy would never deliver the reforms that the long term demands.

The Hantavirus, HTV-23 in Manaus, is the active phase of this project: to create the necessary panic to centralize decisions, approve restrictive legislation, and consolidate the power of those who control money and information.

The battle is not against the virus. It is against the code of fear: amplifying panic until people accept, in good faith, solutions that permanently compromise what they promise to temporarily protect.

The only defense is to understand the mechanism before the fear becomes too great to think clearly.

This is a thriller that begins with a lethal virus in the Amazon and ends with a brutally simple question: who really decides the world we live in, and how long until the next planned crisis?
